Cainta mayor Kit Nieto personally raised PhP 132,000 to augment the municipal government's budget in the continuing COVID-19 crisis.
"Marami-rami na rin tayong mabibigyan ng assistance (dahil dito)," he said in his Facebook post after just one day that three pairs of his shoes were up for auction.
The funds raised, as per the youthful local executive, will be part of their efforts to supplement the national government's Social Amelioration Program.
With that, just about everybody got to know Nieto as much more than just Cainta's proactive mayor.
As it turns out, he actually has a signature look - wearing Jordans.
"Trademark ni ninong yung Jordans," his godson Matt Nieto shared. "Dahil dun, lots of friends and family members ay ganun yung binibigay sa kanya pag Pasko or birthday."
Long before Mayor Kit fell in love with Jordans, however, he had to be introduced to them by no less than the three-time UAAP Srs. and one-time UAAP Jrs. champion with Ateneo de Manila. "When we started being close, parang doon nag-start ang pagko-collect niya ng shoes. Nung time na yun, yung mga shoes niya, sa akin din galing," the latter recalled.
He then continued, "Since I'm a Nike ambassador, may allotted pairs ako ng shoes every month or two so when I found out na nag-start palang mag-basketball si ninong, I gave him my shoes para may panglaro siya na tamang shoes at hindi sumakit paa niya."
From there, it was love at first sight for Cainta's leader. "Mukhang naging malaki yung influence ng ginawa ko kay ninong kasi dati pa lang, I describe to him kung ano yung binibigay ko para alam niya rin yung technology at kung sinong gumagamit nun," Matt said.
And from there, the godfather and godson had for themselves something to bond over - something to bond over that, apparently, had a thing or two to do with the Blue Eagles' three-peat. "Naging tradition na namin ni ninong simula Season 80 na whenever I have a game, I go to his house and give him shoes. Parang pampaswerte lang kasi simula nung ginawa ko yun, maganda laro ko at nananalo," the heady guard who came to be known as "Matty Ice" said.
He then continued, "Until my last season sa Ateneo, tuloy-tuloy lang ang pagbigay ko ng shoes sa kanya."
Who knew that now, those bonding moments would actually be some sort of way for the Nietos to keep helping their kababayans? "Hindi ko akalaing yung pampaswerte ko sa basketball ay ngayon, pampaswerte na ng Cainta. Maraming mapapakain at matutulungan yung naging tradition namin ni ninong," Matt said.
Indeed, mayor Kit has said that he will keep auctioning his shoes through the continuing COVID-19 crisis. "Magpapa-auction ulit ako ng tatlong pares at araw-araw hanggang matapos ang quarantine," he said.
He also added, "O hanggang maubos ang koleksyon ko. Kung sino (man) ang unang sumuko."
